Jigsaw

Jigsaw is Google’s in house incubator for tackling the messy, real world problems that show up where technology meets society. If you land on the Jigsaw site for the first time, it feels less like a corporate brochure and more like an invitation into a workshop, one that’s obsessed with one question: how do you give people more agency online when the stakes are high and the threats keep evolving?

A big part of that story is security, not as a buzzword, but as something practical that keeps journalists, nonprofits, and everyday citizens connected. Jigsaw’s work has included tools that help people stay online during censorship and shutdowns, plus defenses that keep essential websites from being knocked offline by large scale attacks. When you read through the projects, you start to see a pattern: they take problems that usually sound abstract, DDoS attacks, internet blackouts, surveillance, harassment, and they translate them into concrete systems people can actually use.

Privacy shows up in the same grounded way. Rather than treating encryption as a niche feature, the site explains why the internet’s plumbing matters, including how unencrypted DNS can expose what people are trying to read and learn. From there, Jigsaw points to approaches that helped accelerate broader adoption of modern encryption standards, with the goal of making safer defaults feel normal, not special.

Then there is the civic side, which is where Jigsaw has been leaning hard recently. The site frames a modern problem many people feel in their bones: we are more connected than ever, yet we often feel powerless in the systems that shape our lives. Jigsaw’s answer is to explore how AI can support healthier public deliberation at scale, without flattening human nuance into a single statistic. Their experiments around large scale conversations, from community wide town hall style engagement to national conversation formats, focus on helping participants be heard while also helping decision makers understand what people actually mean, not just what gets the loudest reaction.

Even if you are not deep in policy or cybersecurity, the Jigsaw website is worth time for how clearly it connects research, product thinking, and public benefit. It is a place to learn how digital threats are changing, how defenses can be built without turning the internet into a locked box, and how AI might be used to expand participation instead of shrinking it. Underneath the design and storytelling, the message is straightforward: the internet will not fix itself, and building for agency means shipping tools that work in the chaos.
