Google Ads Advertiser Verification: Everything You Need to Know

Google Ads advertiser verification is how Google confirms who is actually behind an ad account: the person or organization running the ads and, in many cases, who pays for them. When an account is selected, Google sends an in-account notification or an email, usually with a deadline. Some advertisers only answer a few questions about their business. Others have to upload a government-issued photo ID, company registration documents, or both.

The deadline is what makes this stressful. Miss it and you’ll find your Google Ads account paused, with no option to extend. Each task can take up to five business days to review, so starting in the final week leaves almost no room for a rejected upload. Many rejections come from small mismatches you can catch beforehand, like a trade name that isn’t on the registration document or an ID photo with one corner cut off.

What Is Google Ads Advertiser Verification?

Advertiser verification is a series of tasks Google uses to confirm who an advertiser is and, for some accounts, how the business operates. After you pass, your verified name and location appear in the ad disclosure people see when they open “About this advertiser” in My Ad Center, and in the public Ads Transparency Center.

Verification is on its way to being universal. Google says all advertisers will eventually have to complete it, and its 2024 Ads Safety Report said more than 90% of the ads people saw on Google came from verified advertisers, on average. Google pairs verification with automated enforcement: in its 2025 Ads Safety Report, the company says it blocked or removed more than 8.3 billion ads and suspended 24.9 million advertiser accounts that year.

People still search for “advertiser identity verification” and “business operations verification” as if they were two separate programs. In the current Google Ads interface, both show up as tasks inside the same flow. Identity tasks confirm who you are. The business operations questionnaire, which most advertisers never see, asks about your organization, what you sell, your ads and your relationships with other organizations.

Why Google Asks an Account to Verify

A verification request isn’t an accusation. Google lists several reasons an account gets selected, and yours may match more than one:

• Your account came up in Google’s gradual rollout, which will eventually include every advertiser.
• You advertise in a category Google treats as prone to abuse, such as financial services, travel, or customer and technical support.
• Your campaigns use cross-geo targeting or show ads on brand-related searches.
• You use features that Google says are often misused.
• Your ad content or account activity was flagged as potentially suspicious.
• Your account is suspended, and Google requires verification before you can appeal.

Google can also pause an account while verification is in progress if it suspects problems such as misleading representation, an unidentified business or an attempt to get around verification itself. In those cases, the ads stay off until every task is complete.

Verifying without a deadline is optional, and doing it early pays off. Google says it can remove limits on your account and unlock features such as showing your business name and logo in Search ads. If your sales depend on a busy season, verify before it starts.

Where to Find Advertiser Verification in Google Ads

Plenty of older tutorials still point to a page called Advertiser verification. Google renamed it, and it now lives under Admin > Policy > Account. To get started:

1. Sign in with a user who has admin access. Google only lets account admins complete verification tasks.
2. Open Billing > Settings and check whether your payments profile is set to Individual or Organization. That setting decides which tasks and documents apply to you.
3. Go to Admin, expand Policy and select Account. Your deadline and assigned tasks are listed there.
4. Click Start task and follow the instructions for each one. Google emails you if it needs more information and sends a confirmation once all tasks are done.

If the account type is wrong, for example a registered company whose billing was set up as Individual, contact Google Ads support before you start. Documents can’t match a profile of the wrong type, and verification attempts are limited.

Verification Deadlines and Review Times

Your timeline depends on which of three situations your account is in. Google’s advertiser verification documentation covers each one in detail, and this is how they compare:

Your situation	What it means	What to do
You have a deadline	The account is paused if you aren’t verified by that date, and some ads may already be restricted.	Start immediately. Each task can take up to 5 business days to review.
No deadline	Verification is optional and your ads keep running either way.	Verify early to remove account limits. Reviews take up to 5 business days and, in rare cases, up to 30.
Account already paused	Ads can’t run again until verification is complete.	Finish every task, then watch for the confirmation email.

Google doesn’t extend deadlines, and your status can take up to five business days to update after a review. A pending status during that window doesn’t mean something went wrong. Performance can dip while you wait. Google says campaigns from accounts asked to verify may be affected on certain restricted queries, and that completing verification may help performance recover.

Passing once doesn’t settle it for good, either. Google may ask you to verify again after significant changes such as a new payments profile, a different billing address or updated business information. If you’re planning a rebrand, a move or a change of ownership, expect a new request and keep your documents ready.

Tasks You May Need to Complete

Google assigns tasks based on your account type, billing setup, industry and other signals, so you probably won’t see all of the ones below.

Tasks for Every Account

Every account answers a few questions about the type of organization and who pays for the ads. If you manage ads for clients, answer Yes to “Is your organization an agency?” because Google warns that getting this wrong can lead to a paused or suspended account.

You’ll also confirm whether you plan to run European Union political ads, a question EU regulations require Google to ask. Answer Yes and those campaigns can’t serve in the EU. A smaller group of advertisers gets the longer business operations questionnaire covering their organization, products or services, ads and relationships with other organizations.

Billing Tasks

Billing tasks confirm the payment method really belongs to you. One of them is a temporary charge of no more than $1.95 USD. You find the charge from Google in your transaction history, enter the last six digits shown on it as your code, and the money comes back within 14 days. Google may also ask about your payment history or ask you to pay an outstanding balance, and accounts on monthly invoicing can go through a different process. If the task asks you to make a payment and your deadline is close, use a card. Google says card payments go through almost immediately, while bank transfers take longer and can leave the account paused until the money arrives.

The charge usually appears within minutes, but Google says it can take up to seven days to show up. If your ad spend runs through a fintech card or a multi-currency business account, like the options in our guide to financial tools for digital entrepreneurs, open the full transaction details rather than the summary list. Some banking apps shorten merchant descriptions and hide the digits you need.

One more billing detail affects what the public sees. If the name you verify differs from your payments profile name, your ad disclosure shows “Ads funded by” followed by the payments profile name.

Tasks for Individuals

If your payments profile is set to Individual, expect some combination of these:

• Submit personal details and a government-issued photo ID. The name and location on your payments profile must match the ID exactly.
• Confirm a phone number with a six-digit code. The area code has to belong to your payments profile country, and after five failed attempts Google asks for a photo ID instead.
• Confirm your Social Security number (United States only). After three failed attempts, you’ll be asked for a photo ID.
• Complete video selfie verification by uploading your photo ID and recording a video selfie. Only an admin on the payments profile can do this, and after five mismatched attempts you’ll need to contact Google.

Tasks for Organizations

Organizations usually start by entering company details, with the option to add a D-U-N-S number from Dun & Bradstreet so Google can check the business information against it. If that check fails three times, Google moves you to document upload.

Document upload means registration documents for the organization, and Google may also want a government-issued photo ID from an authorized representative, meaning an admin on the Google Ads account or on the payments profile that pays for the ads. That person’s ID can be issued in any country. The legal name and location on your payments profile must exactly match those documents. If you trade under a DBA or trade name, that name and the legal name both need to match the registration document you submit. Keep promotional wording and domain names out of the name unless they’re part of the registered legal or trade name, and never add emojis or phone numbers.

Some organizations also get an affiliation check, where Google sends a six-digit code by SMS or to an email address at the organization. It’s required when you have a deadline and optional when you don’t.

Extra Requirements for Regulated Industries

Some categories need certification or extra verification on top of the standard tasks. Google’s current list covers gambling and games, copyrights, dating services in Japan, healthcare and medicines, financial products and services, elections, event ticket sales, government documents and official services, locksmith and garage services, free desktop software, and cryptocurrencies and related products. Advertisers in these categories may also have to answer questions about how their domain relates to the industry. Plan for more time here, since the requirements often depend on local licenses and country-specific rules, and Google says it may add new verification requirements as abuse trends change. Crypto advertisers have a second layer to handle on the landing page itself, since the UK and EU also regulate the risk warnings and marketing statements a site must show, covered in how to design a crypto website that doesn’t look like a scam.

Healthcare is where a state license usually comes before any ad certification. In California, nurses and home care aides are fingerprinted through Live Scan before their license or registration is issued, and so are contractors, real estate agents and notaries who later advertise their services. If that step is still ahead of you, our guide to Live Scan forms, fees and timing in Los Angeles explains which check you need and how long it takes.

Google Ads Verification Documents: What Passes and What Gets Rejected

Accepted documents vary by country, and Google keeps a separate list of accepted documents for each country, and Google keeps a separate list for each one. In the United States, for instance, organizations can use IRS notices that show the organization’s name, such as a CP575 or 147C letter. The photo rules are the same everywhere:

• Photograph the original. Google treats photocopies and screenshots as self-printed and rejects them, and it doesn’t accept digital IDs.
• Keep all four corners in the frame, and upload the back when the document has one.
• Shoot in color, in good light and with a steady hand, so the image is sharp and free of glare. Google doesn’t accept black-and-white images of a photo ID, or an expired ID.
• Upload only what the task asks for. Google says sending other photos or documents can get an account suspended.

Google limits verification attempts to prevent abuse, so a rushed upload costs far more than the minutes it saves. These are the document issues Google reports and how to fix each one:

Issue	What went wrong	How to fix it
Address can’t be verified	The address on the document doesn’t match your payments profile	Update the payments profile address, or submit a document that shows the matching address
Legal name or business information can’t be verified	The name on the document isn’t an exact match for the name in the task or payments profile	Use the legal name exactly as registered, including any suffix such as LLC or Ltd
Document is blurred or poorly lit	The image is dark, soft or low resolution	Retake the photo in daylight with the document flat and in focus
Document is missing the back	Only the front side was uploaded	Upload both sides
Document is self-printed	You uploaded a photocopy or a screenshot	Photograph the original document
Payments mismatch with submitted documents	The document’s country differs from your payments profile country	Use a document issued by your payments profile country (EEA profiles can use an ID from any EEA country), or ask support about a new payments profile
Document type not supported	The document isn’t on the accepted list for your country	Resubmit a registration document or photo ID from your country’s list

The country rule matters most for founders who incorporate abroad. Say you went through Malta company formation for a SaaS business but set up Google Ads billing with your home address in another country. Your registration documents and payments profile will never match, no matter how many clean photos you upload. Fix the payments profile first, even if that means asking support to create a new one.

Make Your Website Match Your Verified Details

No verification task asks you to upload your website, and only advertisers in certain regulated industries answer questions about their domain. The site still counts for everyone. Google can pause an account during verification when it suspects an unidentified business or a problem with business name requirements, and anyone landing on your site should be able to tell which company is behind the ads.

Before you verify, put your site, your payments profile and your registration documents side by side. The legal name or registered trade name should be visible, usually in the footer, on the contact page or on the About page. Use the same address and phone number you give Google, and an email address on your own domain if you have one. A working contact page, a privacy policy and a plain description of what you sell round it out.

Mismatches usually creep in when different people own different pieces. A freelancer builds the campaign landing page under the brand name, the accountant registered the company under its legal name, and nobody checks the footer. Treating web design and digital marketing as one system keeps those details consistent before Google ever looks at them.

Advertiser Verification for Agencies and Client Accounts

Google Ads agency verification happens in two layers. First, the agency answers Yes to the agency question and verifies its own information, which can involve D-U-N-S details, documents, a phone code or, in the US, a Social Security number. Then it handles the client’s side in one of two ways: send the client a link to their task, or complete the task by selecting or creating the client’s payments profile. Google Ad Grants accounts follow the same process, and the profile name has to match the grantee.

An agency can only see payments profiles where it’s an admin. When the client controls billing, send the link instead of asking for their login. Sharing the link doesn’t change billing or give anyone new access to the Google Ads account. For verified agency accounts, the ad disclosure uses the client’s payments profile name, so clients should expect to see their own name on the ads.

If you’re bringing in outside help for campaigns as part of broader digital marketing services, settle three questions before the first campaign goes live: whose payments profile pays for the ads, who holds admin access, and who finishes verification tasks when a deadline arrives.

Shortcuts That Get Google Ads Accounts Suspended

Some advertisers look for a way around verification instead of through it. Google’s policies make every one of these a bad trade:

• Don’t submit someone else’s documents or details you know are inaccurate. Google treats false information during verification as an egregious violation of its Circumventing systems policy: the account is suspended, and Google reinstates accounts only in compelling circumstances.
• Don’t buy, rent or borrow an account that someone else already verified. Keep their payments profile and your ads run under their verified name. Switch it to yours and you’ve made the kind of change that triggers reverification anyway.
• Don’t open a new account to keep advertising after a suspension. Google calls that multiple account abuse and suspends those accounts as soon as it detects them, without prior warning.
• Don’t treat attempts as unlimited. Google caps them, and advertisers who must verify to appeal a suspension lose that option after three failed identity checks.

What to Do If Your Google Ads Verification Failed

Start with the issue message under Admin > Policy > Account. Google names the specific problem, and it usually maps to one of the issues in the table above: a name that isn’t an exact match, a country mismatch, a blurry or self-printed image, or a document that isn’t on the accepted list. Fix that one thing, then retry the task from the same page.

If the payments profile itself is wrong, whether that’s the account type or the country, contact Google Ads support before retrying. Resubmitting the same documents against the same profile will fail for the same reason.

If a failed task led to a suspension, appeal only if you believe Google made a mistake. Open the appeal form from the suspension notification at the top of your Google Ads account (Google’s help pages label that link “Fix it” in one place and “Contact Us” in another), and explain what happened in plain language.

Outside help can be worth paying for after a rejected attempt or two, when your structure is unusual (a holding company, a recent change of name or ownership, an agency paying for several clients), or when you can’t tell which document Google wants. A Google Ads Verification review from a specialist gives you a second pair of eyes on names, addresses and document types before your next submission. Keep expectations realistic: nobody outside Google can guarantee approval, the documents must still be your own, and anyone helping should get access through a Google Ads user invitation rather than your password.

Checklist Before You Click Start Task

1. You’re signed in as an admin on the Google Ads account.
2. Your payments profile type, Individual or Organization, matches how your business is legally set up.
3. The payments profile name, address and country match your ID or registration documents character for character.
4. Your documents are unexpired and on Google’s accepted list for your payments profile country. Registration documents and an individual’s photo ID must come from that country (EEA profiles can use an ID from any EEA country), while an organization’s authorized representative can use a photo ID issued anywhere.
5. You have sharp color photos of the originals, front and back, with all four corners visible and no glare.
6. Your website shows the same legal or registered trade name, address and phone number.
7. You can see full transaction details for the card or account that pays for your ads.
8. You’ve noted the deadline and are starting now, because one review can take a full business week and a rejection starts that wait over.
